About Youth Business Cameroon
Youth Business Cameroon is a registered non-governmental organization initiated in July 2005 by a group of committed Cameroonians. The goal of the organization is to provide young Cameroonian entrepreneurs with the resources they need to generate profits, create jobs, and contribute to the nation’s economy. The organization seeks to promote entrepreneurship among economically underprivileged youth who are motivated to start their own businesses. Youth Business Cameroon aims to turn young, unemployed job-seekers into successful job creators.
Cameroon is one of the most populous countries in Africa, with a population of nearly 25 million, as well as one of the continent’s most diverse – it has been nicknamed “Africa in Miniature” for its cultural and geological diversity. But like many African nations, Cameroon has numerous problems, including red tape and corruption that create barriers to development of the private sector. Also, it is estimated that more than 12 million youth are unemployed or underemployed in Cameroon.
Youth Business Cameroon believes that young people are part of the solution, not the problem,and that permanent and profound damage is caused when their contributions are excluded. The youth of Cameroon are an important resource for catapulting the country forward, and are enthusiastic to share their ideas for growth. Young people are invaluable partners for social development, bringing with them to the table creativity, enthusiasm, and leadership.
With a focus on involving unemployed and underemployed youth and students between the ages of 18 and 35 and young micro-entrepreneurs requiring assistance to improve their businesses, Youth Business Cameroon works in the following areas:
• Advocacy and social mobilization on issues of youth unemployment and underemployment and its consequences
• Leadership, entrepreneurship and citizenship training for youth
• Capacity building of young micro-entrepreneurs
• Information and training for business development and improvement
• Youth networking
Youth Business Cameroon seeks to reduce poverty in Douala and beyond by harnessing the enthusiasm and talent of its young, business-minded citizens. The organization aims to make an impact in the following areas:
• Building entrepreneurial capacity and broadening the horizons of young people in Cameroon
• Developing income-generating activities for young people to improve standards of living
• Promoting gender equality and providing opportunities to young women and men to take personal initiative
• Celebrating the talents and skills of graduates and increasing self-confidence
• Providing decent jobs through the creation of sustainable micro-enterprises by young people
• Reducing illegal immigration due to lack of viable economic opportunities and its consequences of insecurity and social conflict
• Reducing social crimes associated with poverty, including theft, vandalism, and prostitution
• Through a reduction in prostitution, reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people
